The whale shark is the biggest fish existing in the ocean today; they oftentimes grow to over 50 feet (15m) in length. The whale shark prefers very deep waters of warm surface temperature, where plankton - its favorite food - can be found by the ton. The waters of the Yum Balam ecological reserve on Holbox Island enjoy ideal conditions for a whale shark. This protein-rich habitat is equally ideal for schools of Jacks, manta rays and dolphins.
The whale shark is a shark, not a whale. The term ‘whale’ refers to its enormous size and filter-feeding system. It normally feeds on or just below the surface, making conditions very favorable for an up-close-and-personal snorkeling experience.
Whale sharks are viviparous animals and babies are often seen with their mothers.
Whale sharks are very tame creatures and when approached by visitors hardly take notice. They are unaggressive and are in no way threatening to humans. Our boats leave the beach every morning from mid-May to early September and return slightly over five hours later. While on the whale shark tour one may see dolphins, manta rays, sea turtles and an assorted variety of fish and bird species that call Holbox Island home.

CANCELLATION POLICY:
Cancellations made from 30 to 15 days prior to arrival receive 75% of deposit.
Cancellations made from 15 to 2 days prior to arrival receive 50% of deposit.
Cancellations made less than 48 hours prior to arrival do not receive reimbursements.
